Freshmen labor for a month or more going to cheering practices at night. Practice may start as early as 6:00PM and end as late as 12MN. As the day approaches, the hours extend further. Valuable hours for study and rest are instead spent on cheering practices. If you multiply this by the hundreds of students involved, you are looking at thousands of man-hours invested for cheering. Tricycle drivers become prosperous at the expense of freshmens' allowances. Tens of thousands of pesos are spent by all academic groups for costumes, snacks, and props. All that for a 15 minute presentation.

Cheering may perhaps be the largest event for UPV (Iloilo). It is perhaps a showcase of the creativity of the students and a source of much pride. But is it really worth all these?

What could have been achieved if the energy put into cheering was invested into something else? Something with more academic or social relevance and impact?

what's wrong with cheering?
ganyan ba talaga kahirap ang cheering?

for me, look forward ko palagi ang cheering dahil isa ito sa mga ways para makameet ka ng mga new peepz at makainteract sa mga friends mo    okay
what's wrong with the tricycle drivers being helped in a way through you allowances?

it's a way to draw freshmen into activities early on in their stay in UP. para mapalaki kaagad mga kakilala nila at maging close yung mga batches in an academic group.

may mga suggestions ka ba na pangreplace ng cheering? if so, please do tell    okay

I think there's practically nothing wrong with it. Cheering practice is the best way for a freshman to get acquainted with his/her batchmates. It could even teach him/her how to manage time. Financial issues are always part of an event, so I guess it's not really surprising that some things cost too much when they are only subject for publicity for only a short period of time.

I had been in cheering when I was in UPV and I enjoyed it every year!
I was actually part of the squad for three years...
It taught me a lot of things. Social involvement, creativity, tight time management and physical strength, which help me a lot when I graduated.

I think everyone should just enjoy the practice and play with it....

Q: Anong masama sa cheering?
A: WALA!

1. Cheering is the best time for first year students and upperclassmen to know each other.
2. It teaches the freshmen on how to cope with busy schedules.
3. It builds up confidence.
4. For us Skimmers, cheering is a major production, so through  cheering, our students are exposed to the idea of rehearsals and production.
5. It discovers promising talents for future activities.
6. It's fun, fun and fun!

Go SKIMMERS!

This topic is interesting..well, hindi ako noong una nagandahan sa ideya ng cheering sa UP.. i don't even participated cheering when i was a freshman.. but i shifted course..so i was encouraged to help the College  (CFOS) by participating on different events esp. cheering.. at first i was hesitant..pero dahil sa mga di inaasang pangyayari.. I, then decided to join.. i agree that cheering practices require a lot of effort, time and money... pero sulit naman if nakaperform ka na sa harap ng maraming tao lalung lalo na kung nagustuhan nila ito..hay! i love my experience!! that's all i can say.. innocent hehe..

I love cheering practices. Only that some trainors were too serious about winning that they spoil the fun in cheering practices.

Ahaha! Nong Cris, I remembered the moments na hirap na hirap kayo kasi matitigas ulo namin... Naexperience ko rin yung ganun kasi antitigas din ng ulo ng mga sumunod sa amin. But I greatly enjoyed all the cheering practices I had from first to third year!

This year's freshmen are lucky. Acad orgs are required to end cheering practices by 8:30pm. They start at around 5:30pm.

Yes of course. That's really worthy. when you get into cheering squad , the team will have to practice well, so it will worth their practice.
