Another flyover to be built in Iloilo City
January 20, 2009 | Infrastructure Development, Traffic Management & Transportation

ILOILO CITY – Iloilo City is again a recipient of a flyover project under the “MEGA Bridges for Urban and Rural Development Project” that will be funded by the French Government.

The flyover, which is proposed to be constructed at the junction of General Luna-Jalandoni streets, will be implemented under the President’s Bridge Program of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Emil K. Sadain, executive director of the President’s Bridge Program in a letter to Mayor Jerry P. Treñas has requested the assistance of latter’s office for the conduct of soil/geotechnical investigation as part of the design of the substructure.

The Woodfields Consultants Inc has been tapped as project consultant of the project.

Meanwhile, Treñas, in consultation with Sangguniang Panlungsod’s chairman on traffic committee councilor Erwin Plagata, disclosed that they will also look into other areas where traffic congestion is experienced and compared them with the proposed location.

One area is the junction of the national road in Taft North and Diversion Road in Mandurriao.

“This will be the second flyover for Iloilo City,” he said.

Treñas said there was no mention as to the budget allotted for the project.

The first flyover was constructed at the junction of General Luna and Infante streets, which is worth about P400 million.

New call center to rise in Tigbauan

ILOILO CITY, Feb 26 (PNA) – A new call center, RS2, will soon rise in Tigbauan town in the first district of Iloilo province to employ around 30 agents.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Iloilo director Wilhelm Malones said that the call center owned by a German national but who is married to a native resident of Tigbauan is now in the process of constructing the call center near the Coco Grove Beach Resort in the municipality.

The call center will be part of the hotel and resort that the couple is establishing along the beach line which will also employ about 100 hotel staff. The total investment is pegged at around P100 million.

Once operational, the call center will be the 18 that has been established in Iloilo city and province which has been bidding to become the information and technology hub.

Malones said that the putting up of the new call center is also a result of their aggressive investment promotion for Iloilo city and province. (PNA)

^^Right on! And more good news.. Transcom soon to open in Amigo.

Transcom to hire up to 2,000 in Iloilo
By Nestor P. Burgos Jr.
Inquirer Visayas
First Posted 15:02:00 09/20/2009

ILOILO CITY, Philippines--Transcom, touted to be Europe's largest business process outsourcing (BPO) firm, will open a call center in Iloilo in 2009, and will hire from 1,000 to 2,000 employees.

The investment is expected to cement the city's place among the top new wave international BPO sites.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said Transcom has set the hiring of around 1,060 employees in October. It is planning to double its work force after it starts its operations, according to Treñas.

Transcom has 75 sites in 29 countries worldwide and has expertise in various industries including telecommunications, the financial industry, travel and leisure, utilities and retail/consumer goods. It has around 20,000 employees serving over 120 major clients in more than 30 languages.

Treñas said the investment would boost employment opportunities for residents of Iloilo and the rest of Western Visayas.

The investment has also affirmed the city as among the top new BPO investment sites in the world.

The city already hosts nine BPOs with more than 4,000 workers. These include Teletech, ePLDT Ventus, Callbox Customer Contact Center, Global Mega Communications Inc., Techno Call Corp., Interactive Voice Call Center, Medlink Trans Services, Eversun Software Philippines Corp., and Savant Technologies.

The Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) recently cited Iloilo City as the third in the top 10 "next wave cities" for business process outsourcing and information technology because of the low cost of doing business and the availability of talents.

Earlier this year, BusinessWeek magazine said Iloilo and Davao were among the 31 cities that were being eyed by BPO investors due to economic and political pressures to outsource work to lower-cost cities.

The magazine cited a study of the KPMG, a global network of professional services firms, which said that the two Philippine cities were rapidly emerging to compete with traditional BPO destinations, such as Bangalore, Chennai and Shanghai.

The KPMG report said Iloilo had a large talent pool because of the number of educational institutions and strong English skills of the population.

The regional center of Western Visayas, Iloilo has six universities, more than 30 colleges, and technical schools producing more than 17,000 students graduates annually.

The KPMG report said the talent pool was suitable for voice-based operation of call centers due to the populace's diction and cultural similarities with the United States.

Treñas credited the heightened investor confidence in the city to the strong partnership between the private sector and the local government and the investment promotions undertaken by various organizations.

The city has been elevated to the prestigious Hall of Fame of the Palladium Balanced Scorecard for executing strategy. The Palladium Group, is an international organization, which supports efforts of organizations and government units to achieve strategy-focused goals.

The citation to be formally awarded in a summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, on October 5, will be the first for any organization or government unit in the Philippines, according to Treñas.

I went to Iloilo City last Dec 30 and super duper ang traffic sa Tagbak, Jaro..question though, bakit hindi man lang magawang bigyan ng information ng mga authorities (traffic management) na may option ang mga private vehicles going to the City Proper or La Paz na they take Coastal Road taking Metropolis (ba yun)..My cousin took that way to La Paz plaza..nagtitiis ang mga motorists doon sa super puno na kalsada going to Jaro plaza.

Welcome back to Iloilo!

I went to Iloilo City last Dec 30 and super duper ang traffic sa Tagbak, Jaro..question though, bakit hindi man lang magawang bigyan ng information ng mga authorities (traffic management) na may option ang mga private vehicles going to the City Proper or La Paz na they take Coastal Road taking Metropolis (ba yun)..My cousin took that way to La Paz plaza..nagtitiis ang mga motorists doon sa super puno na kalsada going to Jaro plaza.

Many private vehicles from Leganes and Northern Iloilo do turn towards the Coastal Road when it comes to that area. Those who don't must be either headed somewhere in Jaro or Mandurriao or ignorant of the well-known alternative route.

Bakante na ang lote sa Plaza Libertad where Iloilo City Hall stood before.

It's been like that for a very long time.. but finally they recently just awarded the contract to a bidder. And the most recent rendering of the city hall is...

not that impressive.

Andun pa din sa Muelle Loney ang lumang-lumang TRV Sardinella na parang museum na lang for UPV students.

Here's the latest that I know about Sardinella:

There are plans to revitalize the (~100-year old?) Central Market, but plans are plans.. Here's a sneak preview:
